Aaron Gershfield's Team: The San Francisco 49ers

Although I may not have a college football team, I still have the Football team I grew up watching— the San Francisco 49ers. Growing up in the 80s, I remember watching the “golden days” of the 49ers and the West Coast Offense with my. We had two amazing Quarterbacks, Joe Montana, and Steve Young. Also, who can forget the greatest of all time, the best receiver ever, Jerry Rice.

Jerry Rice is probably the main reason why I’m such a hardcore 49ers fan. It was amazing watching my favorite receiver catch touchdowns and break and grab hold of new records. And it was amazing to watch the 49ers to be such a pass-oriented team. The games were always exciting; and to me, lots of good passes resulted in lots of touchdowns. And lots of touchdowns gave you more reason to yell and cheer. It’s always fun to be part of a winning tradition. Also, watching and going to 49er games with my father was probably the foundation of our father-and-son relationship. It was his way of showing me how to care for something else other than my self—selfless-ness, the opposite of most people’s flaw, selfishness.

Now, it’s 2007. And although the 49ers haven’t won a Super Bowl in 12 years (since 1995), I think my team’s organization have made some pretty good choices. I think the 49ers are ready to be that team to watch out for, once again. We’ve got a promising quarterback in Alex Smith, who was a #1 overall pick. Vernon Davis, another high prospect, should be a threat as he is probably one of the fastest tight ends ever in the league. And Frank Gore is on his way to being an elite running back, as he led the NFC in rushing last year. However, I still feel that they haven’t found that elite, superstar receiver. They still need a Jerry Rice type of wideout. But I still believe in the 49ers. Watching them in the 2006 season shows that they are on the right path to being the dynasty-caliber team they once were.
