Aaron Gershfield and Urban Studies
![]() |
As you have read earlier, I am back in the city, going to school and majoring in Urban Studies. Having to adjust to my new school hasn’t been a problem. The only thing I had to get used to was my new schedule/ hours. Having grown up in the Bay Area, I knew what to expect when I came back. I was familiar with the weather, and I welcomed the vibe and diversity once again.
And even though I might not know a lot of people in my third year of college, I’m excited about making new friends and spending some more time with my family and my girlfriend, (who I didn’t have with me while I was living in Southern California). New beginnings don’t scare me. I always look forward to anything that’s challenging.
One thing I will have to get used to though, is the fact that I am now going to a school that doesn’t have a college football team. That is definitely one thing I am going to miss about attending my last college, where they had a highly respectable college football program. But I have to go with my happiness and education first— that’s why I moved back to the city. I’m happy to be back where I grew up, and I’m happy to be closer to my loved ones and possibly where my future stands.
As I study Urban Studies, I would eventually want a job where I can help tackle issues and concerns that my city might have. I would ultimately want the city of San Francisco to be a more livable, humane, and sustainable place for people.
As a student and an intern for various organizations, I feel that I have made some important contributions through my research and hard work. I hope to work in either: a housing and community development corporation, a transportation planning agency, a health and social service organizations, an environmental organizations, or at a general public management position. The network of contacts that my school department has will surely provide an opportunity that’s the perfect match for my Urban Studies degree. With what I’ve learned, I hope to bring change to the larger community.
